Description
Rick Kulasinsky was the chairman of the committee responsible for selecting the items, the materials for the container, and the burial site. The committee members were: Barbara & Robert Gliha, Daniel Blodnikar, Tom Prince and Rick Kulasinsky.
Magnetic tapes or film probably were not be included because of their rapid deterioration. The type of paper placed in the capsule was dependent on its composition. Some papers, such as low acid papers, deteriorate rapidly. If a CD rom were included, then a cd player was included. Perhaps this is limited to audio, since the data file formats will probably change over the years. The formats have changed greatly over the past several years and many file formats of 5 years ago are now obsolete and discarded. Laminated papers have a good chance of survival.
The restrictions above are listed to alert the reader that the Time Capsule Committee had considered each suggested item not only on the merits of its contents, but also on the survivability of the item. The container and the burial site also require detailed study.
The development of the Time Capsule was a very challenging effort. The Time Capsule when opened 100 years from now on the eve of the 22nd century will provide the viewers an insight to our culture and our mode of living. Perhaps they will consider our telecommunications, health care, transportation, etc. as very primitive, if the world technologies grow exponentially as expected. However, if wars or natural disasters, such as earthquakes, asteroids, etc., result in humans resorting to a farming existence to survive, then the contents of the Capsule can explain our technologies. One wonders whether there is a Time Capsule that would explain the technological feats of the Egyptian Sphinx and pyramids or any of the unexplained ancient mysteries.
